Collect minimum records to prepare for certification
In general, cow-calf operations require a minimum of 6 months of records and feedlots 3 months of records before an on-farm assessment. The records needed are outlined in VBP+ training and other VBP+ resources.

Complete a self-assessment
Your provincial coordinator will go through a pre-assessment prep call with you to make sure there are no major changes needed for a successful on-farm assessment. Producers can also complete a self-assessment, going through all of the questions that will be asked on the on-farm assessment with the same scoring system, through the Canadian Cattle Learning Center.

Receive the assessment report and resolve any Corrective Action Requests (CARs)
You will receive a report after your on-farm assessment. You will not fail! Instead, if there are any issues meeting the program requirements, the assessor will issue a Corrective Action Request (CAR), which will ask you to fulfill the requirement within a certain timeline.

Make use of your certification!

Producers do not have to complete an on-farm assessment every year! VBP+ runs on a five-year assessment cycle.

IN YEAR 1, producers do the full on-farm assessment to get certified.

IN YEARS 2 AND 4, producers submit the suite of records required under the program to VBP+ Delivery Services Inc. This makes sure that all the processes verified on-farm are still running smoothly!

IN YEARS 3 AND 5, producers submit a self-declaration to VBP+ Delivery Services Inc. to verify that they are still doing all the practices verified during the on-farm assessment.

AFTER 5 YEARS, the cycle starts over again!
